MOFA warns against visiting Ecuador

Taipei, Oct. 1 (CNA) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) warned Taiwanese tourists Friday against traveling to Ecuador in the aftermath of a reported coup attempt in the South American country.

Ecuadorian troops rescued the country's president, Rafael Correa, after a shootout with the police in the capital city of Quito, the ministry said in a statement.

A state of emergency has been declared in Ecuador, but all Taiwanese nationals in Ecuador are safe, the MOFA statement added.

It also warned local residents against making unnecessary visits to the South American country in light of political instability.

On Thursday, the MOFA also issued a press release to alert Taiwanese nationals about visiting France, which has been warned about an imminent terrorist attack after the kidnapping of French nationals in Niger and bomb threats in Paris. (By Chris Wang) enditem/ls
