The campaign office of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) plans to screen 10 films before Dec. 30, among them Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, a 1991 film featuring Hollywood star Kevin Costner, the office said yesterday.
The US film is the only non-Taiwanese production, said Lin He-ming (林鶴明), deputy director of the campaign’s youth development department, adding that the films would be screened at the campaign headquarters in Banciao District (板橋), New Taipei City (新北市), on Fridays and Saturdays.
Tsai’s campaign is riding the Robin Hood bandwagon after a recent story by The Associated Press described her as a “Robin Hood-like heroine.”
In its latest promotion, the DPP on Wednesday distributed 20,000 limited-edition white piggy banks decorated with Robin Hood hat stickers.
Since the Robin Hood discussions have been popular, Lin said, the DPP contacted the distributor of the Hollywood movie and added it to the screening list.
The movie will be screened at 5pm at campaign headquarters.
The movie screenings aims to appeal to young voters, with the party hoping the movies would increase the number of visits to its campaign headquarters, Lin said.
The party also wants to pay tribute to Taiwan’s film industry, which has enjoyed a fruitful year so far, he said, adding that the movies cover different topics, such as care for the elderly, children, democracy, transitional justice and local culture.
The nine Taiwanese productions and documentaries are: The Fourth Portrait (第四張畫), The Long Goodbye (被遺忘的時光), Night Market Hero (雞排英雄), Young at Heart (青春啦啦隊), Tears (眼淚), Dear Taiwan (好國好民), Hip Hop Storm (街舞狂潮), The Right Thing (廣場) and Orz Boyz (囧男孩).
