The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) yesterday declined to comment on Chairman Su Tseng-chang’s (蘇貞昌) reported visit to Singapore and meeting with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong (李顯龍).
The Chinese-language United Evening News reported yesterday that Su began a low-key three-day visit to the city-state yesterday and was scheduled to meet today with Lee and his father, former Singaporean prime minister Lee Kuan Yew (李光耀), before returning to Taiwan.
Su is being accompanied by Joseph Wu (吳釗燮), executive director of the DPP’s Policy Research Committee and a former Mainland Affairs Council chairman, as well as Liu Shih-chung (劉世忠), director of the party’s Department of International Affairs, according to the newspaper.
The report quoted anonymous sources as saying that Su could ask the two Lees to act as intermediaries in arranging a meeting with Chinese officials to “mend fences,” after a comment by Su about a “democratic alliance” initiative during his February visit to Japan infuriated Beijing.
Sources said Su knows many high-ranking Singaporean officials and has met Lee Kuan Yew at least four times in the past decade.
