The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) congratulated Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi for receiving the Nobel Peace Prize and pledged full support as Myanmar emerges from the shadow of a military regime.
“I would like to express my heartfelt congratulations to you on your recent trip to Oslo, where you have finally, after 21 years, accepted in person the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize that was awarded to you in 1991,” DPP Chairman Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) wrote in a congratulatory letter.
“I want to convey to you our utmost admiration for your remarkable commitment to promoting freedom and democracy in Burma throughout the years. Your courage and tireless efforts have led to a new era in Burma’s history and have inspired all of us around the world,” Su wrote.
Su said the DPP had worked closely with Liberal International (LI) and the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats, of which the DPP and Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) are members.
As both parties have experienced many years of struggle because of an authoritarian regime, Su said the DPP fully understands that democracy should be cherished, safeguarded and further strengthened.
Su pledged the DPP’s full support of her dedication to the cause to bring about freedom and democracy in Myanmar.
In August, a DPP women’s delegation visited Aung San Suu Kyi in Yangon and met with NLD members at the party’s headquarters.
