Taiwan's IOC member re-elected as international boxing chief

Taipei, Nov. 2 (CNA) Taiwan's Wu Ching-kuo was elected unopposed to serve a second four-year term as president of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) at the organization's 2010 congress held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, Wu's office said in a press release Tuesday.

Wu, Taiwan's sole member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) , will now serve until 2014, having taken over the post from AIBA's previous president Anwar Choudry of Pakistan, in 2006.

The 2006 election made Wu, who campaigned on a platform of total reform of the AIBA, the first Taiwanese to serve as president of any international sports federation.

"We have a lot of work. Although we have achieved many things, you have all demonstrated that you want a new AIBA... I give this commitment to you: I will do everything I can to make sure we are a clean organization, " Wu, 64, told representatives from 106 member countries after being reelected.

According to the AIBA, its member federations now number 195, making it the third largest international sports federation in the world.

Wu, a IOC member since 1988, established his reputation as a close confidant of late IOC president Juan Samaranch. He helped make women's boxing an official sport for the 2012 London Summer Olympics during his first term as AIBA President. (By Chris Wang) enditem/MH
