Wyverns, Elephants split two-game Taiwan-Korea baseball series

Taipei, Nov. 5 (CNA) South Korea's SK Wyverns beat the Brother Elephants 5-2 in Taichung Friday night to split a two-game series between the South Korean and Taiwanese professional baseball champions.

For splitting the series, each team will collect NT$5 million in prize money. Had the Brother Elephants won the second game and completed a sweep, they would have taken home NT$8 million.

The most valuable player award for Friday's game went to Wyverns 41-year-old Japanese starter Ken Kadokura, who pitched seven shutout innings.

In Game 1 on Thursday, the Elephants erased a 2-1 deficit in the ninth to win 3-2 on Wang Sheng-wei's walk-off double.

But the home team failed to duplicate the same clutch hitting in Game 2. The Elephants were outhit by the Koreans by only an 8-7 margin and loaded the bases in the seventh and eighth innings, but they could only manage two runs, both in the eighth.

Elephants starter Jim Magrane yielded six hits and walked three in 6 2/3 innings. Designated hitter Chou Szu-chi had three hits in four at-bats. (By Chris Wang) enditem/ls
