Taiwanese player advances to Taipei Tennis Open doubles semis

Taipei, Nov. 4 (CNA) Taiwan's Hsieh Su-wei teamed up with India's Sania Mirza to advance to the doubles semifinals, while China's Peng Shuai had two wins in a day to advance to the singles quarterfinals and doubles semifinals in the 2010 OEC Taipei Ladies Open Thursday.

Hsieh, the world No. 48 in women's doubles, and Mirza dispatched Kao Shao-yuan of Taiwan and Zhang Ling of Hong Kong 6-3, 6-3 to set up a semifinals clash with Jarmila Groth of Australia and Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand, who defeated Ukraine's Yulia Beygelzimer and Ksenia Lykina in straight sets that same day.

World No. 95 Peng beat compatriot Yan Zi 7-5, 6-1 early in the afternoon to advance to the singles quarterfinals before teaming up with Yan for a 6-3, 6-2 win over an Indonesian combo of Yayuk Basuki and Jessy Rompies for a berth in the semifinals.

The most inspiring win came from Serbian world No. 72 Bojana Jovanovski, who overcame a first-set slump and rallied to beat Noppawan Lertcheewakarn of Thailand 0-6, 6-4, 6-1. Jovannovski will meet Peng for a place in the semifinals.

Ayumi Morita of Japan, ranked No. 76 in the world, beat Romanian Madalina Gojnea 6-2, 6-7 (4-7) , 6-4. Her opponent in the quarterfinals will be Wang Qiang of China, who beat Zhang Ling 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.

Taiwan's Chuan Chia-jung and Chang Kai-chen are scheduled to meet Elena Bogdan (Romania) /Lertcheewakarn Friday for the final of the four double semifinal spots.

The total purse for the International Tennis Federation (ITF) event is US$100,000, according to the Chinese Taipei Tennis Association, which is organizing the tournament.

Defending singles champion Chan Yung-jan, Taiwan's highest-ranked singles player at No. 81 in the world, withdrew from the tournament last week due to pneumonia. (By Chris Wang) ENDITEM/J
